A mail-in rebate is one that (obviously) must be redeemed through the mail, unlike an instant rebate, which gives the customer money back at the time of purchase. A product that comes with a mail-in rebate are usually labeled as such, which tells the buyer that they can get some of the purchase price back if they want to take the time to mail in the rebate form. Generally, mail-in rebates are offered by stores with the purchase of a certain product, or those over a set amount. One of the mail-in rebate’s biggest advantages is that it is often more than an instant rebate. Though mail-in rebates can be a pain to deal with, some people actually like the idea of getting a check in the mail weeks or months after making that big purchase. Manufacturers like mail-in rebates because it makes their product seem less expensive, and many buyers neglect to finish the rebate process, letting the company keep all the profit while still offering the appearance of a discount.
